Welcome to the blog of the Latin American Platform on Climate

Latin American Platform on Climate (LAPC)

In January 2009, thanks to support from the AVINA Foundation, the Latin American Platform on Climate (LAPC) was formed by 17 civil-society organizations, from nine countries of the region (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay), designating the Fundación Futuro Latinoamericano (FFLA) as the LAPC Executive Secretariat. LAPC involves convergence, dialogue and coordination among diverse stakeholders committed to finding answers to the challenges calling for radical changes, which humankind is now facing

Vision

Latin America, firmly grounded in its natural and cultural heritage, is leading the construction of a more equitable world that acknowledges the boundaries of Nature, to overcome the threat of climate change and construct new ways of living on this planet.

Mission

Generate answers, from and for Latin America, for the global problem of climate change.

Objective

Contribute to ensuring that addressing climate change and its effects will be a top-priority for political, environmental, social and economic decision-making, at multiple levels, in both the public and private sector.

LAPC’s unique approach

  • A global stakeholder, with a Latin American identity and positioning.
  • Latin American members and partner institutions.
  • Plural, multi-regional, leadership-focused integration.
  • Facilitates, catalyzes and coordinates collective Latin American processes and initiatives, on a continental scope.
  • Public policies as the unifying element.

The LAPC is pursuing the following Strategic Action Guidelines

  1. Promote and facilitate dialogue, coordinating Latin American and global initiatives to build social capital and catalyze consensus-based, duly informed responses to climate change in Latin America.
  2. Generate and gather knowledge, in terms of the Latin American reality, to generate public policies on climate change at the local, national, regional and global level.
  3. Advocate for the generation and implementation of public policies on climate change, installing Latin American proposals at the local, national, and international level.
  4. Generate innovative collective proposals from Latin America with regional relevance.
  5. Spread messages before the public eye on possible transformations and impacts.

In the framework of these strategic activities, the Platform is preparing a Report on the Status and Quality of Public Policies on Climate Change and Development in Latin America. This Report comes out every two years, with support from the Oak Foundation and the AVINA Foundation. It seeks to contribute to improving the quality of public policies about climate change and development (CCD) in the region, to building capacities of policy-makers and civil society to develop CCD policies as regional positions in the international negotiations by identifying common strategies to pursue, on the basis of this document.

The LAPC Blog

The Platform is working to exchange Latin American perspectives, generate debate and receive opinions on these issues with every stakeholder in society. Our blog is regularly updated with the latest and most important issues discussed in the international climate negotiations and presents ongoing analyses regarding climate change in Latin America and the Caribbean by Platform members and guest experts.
